SOLD Very Holy! 19th C.Crucifix in Marvelous Gilded Shadow Box

Regular price $125.00

It turned out to be a great week for holy things, which is a great week in my book; though I'm not the least bit religious, I sure do love religious icons of all sorts, the more singular and unusual the better, of course. This, then, is just my sort of crucifix--Jesus cast of brass it appears, then nailed to a (much aged) gold painted wooden cross, with what appears to be a hand-engraved brass INRI (excellent lettering) banner affixed to the cross just above. The crucifix hangs from a large nail inside this wonderful diamond shaped shadow box with original glass, with (again much worn and aged) gold paint over gesso around the perimeter. The back of the box, which itself eels rather like a coffin, is a good indicator of its age (early-mid 19th c. I might guess)--and can be opened by loosening one of the screws (which I did myself to rehang the crucifix on its nail, from which it had fallen off.) With a hook at top for hanging.

11" t x 6" w x 1 1/2" d and in sturdy and stable condition. Lots of loss to the gilding, as evident, which feels just as it should be.
