Among my very favorite Brimfield finds, I purchased this one from a South Carolina based dealer who has been the source of a number of treasures. I've never seen the likes of it before, a paperweight with photograph embedded--perfectly framed by cutout heart inside the larger brass heart. Surely a love token, and surely made by a metalsmith, in 1903, I presume for his sweetheart Carrie (or Earrie? but I'm thinking maybe he just added an extra flourish to the "C"...) all wonderfully spelled out in dots. All the better for 100+ years of crustiness surrounding the deeply recessed photo--which I'd never touch. Heavy and solid, composed of stacked layers, showing brass and red and black and silver, with three pins visible on the underside. Great object, wonderfully personal, with a terrific presence and patina and feel in the hand.
2 5/8" t x 2 9/16" w x 1 5/8" d and in very good antique condition, with a nice warm patina to the brass.
