Several years ago I had a waterfall painting that seemed to me very erotic, and this one, oil on tin, feels a bit that way too--I think particularly because of the tight framing of the rushing blue fall, which somehow me think of Duchamp's Étant donnés, viewed through a peephole. But, whatever, it's a lovely and satisfying waterfall. In an excellent period silver gessoed frame. And feels quite contemporary too, straight forward but on the edge of pure painterly abstraction, calling to my mind the work of Howard Hodgkin. Signed what looks to me D. Jaures, 1884, at lower left. A nice one to live with I think.
Framed, as found: 12" x 8 5/8". Painting: 9" x 5 1/2". Very good antique condition.
