Lovely 1796 Hand-carved Spoon with Handwritten Inlay Under Glass

Regular price $150.00

A wonderfully tender, special feeling thing, this spoon, from a time when spoons were still fairly precious things. This one Is Welch, I believe (Tregaron is an ancient market town in Ceredigion, Wales), with the name R.H. Jones --followed by Lamb, I am not certain if part of his name or?--and date of 1796 (I believe a 9) handwritten and inlaid, under glass, in the handle, surrounded by chip carved decoration. Quite likely a love token (love spoon), of which there is a long Welch tradition, but older and more charming than any I've seen before, a with a very graceful from. So nice to think of all the hands that have held it, too.

6 5/8" l x 1 3/4" w x 7/8" t. Excellent antique condition, no issues at all, perfect patina.
